Registration and Licensing

One of the objectives of the Portuguese Health Regulatory Authority’s (ERS) regulatory activity, among others, is to ensure that healthcare providers comply with the legal requirements for operating healthcare units, including those related to their licensing.

In this regard, ERS is responsible for:

a) Issuing opinions and making recommendations on the requirements necessary for the operation of healthcare units;

b) Reviewing and deciding on licensing applications for healthcare units in accordance with the applicable legal framework;

c) Ensuring compliance with the legal and regulatory requirements governing the operation of healthcare units, and imposing sanctions for any breaches;

d) Maintaining a mandatory and public list of registered healthcare units and ensuring that it is kept up to date.
